In 1969, Alfred Harth (Frankfurt/Main) and Nicole van den Plas (Mol, Belgium) met for the first time at a jazz festival in San Sebastian, Spain. Shortly thereafter, they established a residency and rehearsal space in a secluded farmhouse in the nearby village of Olmen, Belgium. The villages of Mol and Olmen are located not far from Antwerp, and Belgium had a thriving music scene at that time. Jean, Nicole's brother, was a frequent presence, and other members of Just Music would stop by on their way to perform together as Panta Rei in festivals in Ghent, Bilzen, and beyond.
In 1972, Nicole and Alfred played a concert with Peter Kowald and Paul Lovens in Brugge. Sven-Åke Johansson joined them in Mol after E.M.T. had formed. Jean van den Plas and his wife Liliane Vertessen were sometimes guests at their concerts in Germany.
After a longer lasting trip to Munich, including a performance with bassist Manfred Eicher, Nicole and Alfred moved to Frankfurt and took up residence in an apartment on Freiligrath Straße. In order to rehearse without disturbing their neighbors, they utilized the former rooms of the "centrum freier cunst" in the Fuchshohl, where the free music group Just Music had rehearsed and performed between 1967 and 1972. They set up a grand piano for Nicole and various percussion instruments, which they used until 1975, when they played their last provisional concert together at the King Kong Festival in Antwerp.
In the Chinese zodiac, Nicole van den Plas is a goat and Alfred Harth is an ox. The two signs share many characteristics.
